The design system is based on the following priniples:

Users First

Delight customers with a simple, intuitive and coherent customer experience. We apply evidence based design over opinion and user test where possible.

Design Driven

Apply a design first strategy whereby problems and challenges are first solved in design with product/business owners and then user tested before being implemented in development.

Accessible

Ensure people with different needs can use the products and that they meet the accessibility standards outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level A & AA, and Level AAA where possible.

Consistent

Use the same language and design patterns wherever possible, this ensures people get familiar with how to use our products and the functionality within those products. It also eliminates repetitive work across teams.

Scalable

Flexible with variations yet rules based to ensure best practices are maintained. The design system can scale quickly, evolve, and adapt to various user needs.

Encapsulation

Components and patterns only control or affect the content and functionality within them, they should not control anything externally.
